You see, a few years ago, when I was with Channels Television, as the head of the Web Unit, I explored a few things that other media organisations were not looking at at the time.
That exploit left me with awe as I saw the organisation’s visibility, followership and revenue from AdSense soar. I had come in as a Online Content Creator, with mastery on article writing, so I held the Editor-in-chief position in the department.

Imagine throwing a party without knowing what your guests like. So, you serve them meat even when a majority of them are vegetarians.
Awkward, right? Writing works the same way. Before you start, ask yourself:
- Who am I writing for?
- What are their interests, problems, or goals?
For example, if your readers are busy mums, keep it simple and practical. If they’re tech enthusiasts, go for detailed insights and industry jargon.
Pro Tip: Create a “reader persona” to keep your audience in mind as you write. Stick it to your desk. It could be in form of a list of who they are and what they represent.
2. Master The Art Of Headlines
Your headline is like the front door of your article—it needs to be inviting. A great headline grabs attention and makes readers want to click.
- Use numbers: “10 Tips for Writing Engaging Articles” (Listicle)Â
- Spark curiosity: “Why Most Writers Struggle (And How to Succeed)”
- Keep it clear: Avoid confusing or vague titles.
Remember, a strong headline sets the tone for your entire article.
3. Start With A Hook
before now, when you hear a hook, you could just think of fishing. Now, in content or article writing, we hook people with a great start.
Once your headline helps get your reader’s attention, the next thing is to hook that attention.
It is most important to keep your reader’s attention. The first few lines of your article should hook your audience like a catchy movie trailer.
- Start with a question: “Ever wondered why some articles go viral while others flop?”
- Share a surprising fact: “Did you know the average person spends 7 hours online every day?”
- Tell a quick story: Everyone loves a relatable moment.
4. Keep It Organised And Easy To Read
Nobody likes reading a wall of text. Here’s how to keep your article reader-friendly:
- Use short paragraphs (2–3 sentences).
- Break it up with subheadings just like you see in this article.
- Add bullet points or numbered lists for key points.
Example: Instead of saying, “Here’s everything you need to know about saving money,” break it down like this:

5. Write Like You Talk
Ever read something that felt… robotic? Don’t be that writer.
To be a prolific article writer, you need to write as if you’re having a conversation with your reader. Use a friendly tone, contractions (like don’t instead of do not), and keep it simple.
Example: Instead of saying, “It is advisable to consume adequate hydration for optimal functioning,” just say, “Drink enough water to stay healthy”.
6. Add Value To Your Readers’ Lives
What’s in it for your reader?
What is in it for me? That’s what every reader is thinking.

For instance, if you’re writing about time management, don’t just list tips—explain how each one works and why it’s effective.

You see, you need your article to show up in places where people are looking for it or something related to it. As a result, every article writer needs to write to appear in the front page of the search engine.
For instance, if you want your article to rank on Google, you need to sprinkle in some SEO magic. Here’s how:
- Research keywords using tools like Google Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest.
- Naturally incorporate keywords into your headline, subheadings, and text.
- Use meta descriptions and alt text for images.
But don’t over-stuff keywords! Readers come first, always.
8. Edit Like A Pro
Writing is only half the battle – editing is where the magic happens. After writing your draft:
- Take a break, then come back with fresh eyes.
- Cut out fluff and repetition.
- Read your article out loud to catch awkward phrasing. This one here, really works for me.
As an article writer myself, I always keep in mind that readers hate errors. They make you unprofessional and they are put-offs.
